THE SINGLE MOST IMPORTANT THING a company can do to protect themselves against having a forensic problem at a later date is to perform what’s called a “Forensic Image” of ANY key employee’s hard drive when that employee leaves the company. A “key” employee is any employee that has or had access to sensitive company materials or anything that you wouldn’t want in the hands of a competitor.

FORENSIC IMAGING IS NOT THE SAME THING as making a normal or backup copy of a hard drive. A Forensic Image follows specialized crucial procedures and performs a bit-for-bit copy of every sector on the hard drive. Forensic Images allow for the later recovery of deleted files and deleted email from slack and unallocated space. Forensic images are verified using a precise mathematical value that guarantees that the copy and the original are identical to each other.
